Satellites

  • At any given time, 3-5 satellites are gathering data, triangulating location and transmitting that information to the AVL system.
  • Satellites can pinpoint vehicle locations to within 3-15 feet.

Vehicles

  • Each vehicles is equipped with a GPS receiver that sends data through a modem to a radio located on the vehicle.
  • The data is then transmitted to the tower site.

Tower

  • The tower site gives greater distances to track vehicles.
  • From the tower, information is sent to the base station.

Base Station

  • The base station receives the data and transmits it to the computer to show vehicle location.
